OPTION 1: FULL REPLACEMENT

A comprehensive plan to replace the entire sound system, update the lighting system, and upgrade SFX/VFX/projection systems. This includes the wiring in the walls to the amplifiers, speakers, control console, microphones and accessories, LED lights, lighting control console, computers, software, accessories, and a large venue pro

OPTION 2: PHASED REPLACEMENT

Beginning with core infrastructure and audio equipment, followed by phased integration of lighting and effects systems, this option allows for different order of implementation

LED lighting technology surged in the early 2000s, but after 22 years, the existing system lacks versatility and control. While some upgrades have been made, including replacing dead lights and enhancing the control console, the current Windows-based system is outdated and cannot support new firmware. Proposed upgrades include LED cyc lights, a new control console, and various lighting fixtures from Electronic Theater Controls (ETC). These improvements aim to enhance show quality and can be implemented all at once or in phases as funding permits. Equipment costs include:

  • ETC Color Source Cyc Lights: $21,600-$28,800
  • ETC Ion XE or Gio@5 Control Console: $15,800-$19,800
  • ETC Color Source Fresnel V: $28,000
  • ETC Color Source Par V Zoom: $9,000
  • ETC Halcyon Gold: $108,000
  • ETC Halcyon Titanium: $78,000
  • ETC Lighting Network Upgrade: TBD

Consultation with a local ETC representative is recommended for potential discounts and alternative fixture suggestions.

In 2022, Graham Audio, a local professional sound and video company with a rich history of collaboration with PPS, created a preliminary document to guide our planning for sound system upgrades. This includes:

  • New amplifiers
  • Speakers
  • A new control console
  • Digital patching and processing
  • New wiring, etc.

Such enhancements promise substantial improvements in sound quality, user-friendliness, future upgradability, overdrive protection, and more. Additionally, while new wireless microphones (not included in this plan) should be considered, simply purchasing them would not effectively address the system-wide issues we face.

We utilize QLab software for music playback, sound effects, and video projection in our productions. This Mac-exclusive application provides precise control in a user-friendly format, making it an ideal choice for our dance and theater requirements. Currently, we own two Version 4 license bundles—one for the Theater and another for the Black Box—both operating on 2012 iMacs that are no longer supported. One of these machines does not allow us administrative access, preventing even basic adjustments like sleep time. It’s clear that we need to upgrade both our software and hardware.

  • QLab v4 to v5 Upgrade: 2 x $600 = $1,200
  • iMac (M4 Chip, 16GB Memory, 1TB Storage): 2 x $1,700 = $3,400
  • Audio Interface:2 x $250 = $500

For various meetings, presentations, and video screenings, we utilize a 4,200-lumen Epson 1940W projector that is mounted on the balcony rail. This setup has several advantages, the most significant being that it is always configured and ready for use. However, since we are front-projecting onto a rear projection screen, the resulting image is considerably dimmer than desired. To achieve a more suitable level of image brightness, we need a projector suitable for larger venues. It is recommended to consult with a reputable dealer to specify the correct lens and conduct a test viewing. Based on a quick online search, here are some potential options that may fit our needs:

  • NEC PV710UL-B1-13ZL (7,100 lumens): $6,563
  • Optoma ZK1320 (11,500 lumens): Price not available
  • Optoma ZK1120 (9,300 lumens): $24,999
  • Christie M 4K25 RGB (22,500 lumens): $69,999
